Sam Weller

Sam Weller, the most popular character in The Pickwick Papers, works for Pickwick, but he often knows more than Pickwick. (page 6)

Oliver Twist

As soon as Oliver is born, in the begining of the story, his poor young mother dies. Mr Bumble names the boy Oliver Twist. (page 10) Oliver is a boy who lives in a workhouse since he was born. (page 11) After Oliver asks for more, he is sent away from the workhouse. (page 12) He meets some criminals but Oliver does not become one of them. (page 13)

American Notes

American Notes is one book Charles Dickens wrote about his tour in the US. (page 21)

He hated the fact that there were still slaves in the US. He visited a prison and found the conditions very bad. He wasn’t happy about how his work was published there. (page 21)

A Christmas Carol

Ebenezer Scrooge, the main character, hastes everything about Christmas. Scrooge is mean and unkind, a business man witout time for friends or relatives. He only loves money. (page 24)

He lives alone and, in the night before Christmas, he returns from his job to his empty home. When he arrives, he sees the face of his old partner, Jacob Marley. But Jacob died seven years ago. (page 24)

After the visit of three ghosts, Scrooge is a different man. He is happy and kind to other people, now. He visit his relatives, gives Bob Cratchit, who works for Scrooge, more money and he is ‘a second father’ to Bob’s ill son, Tiny Tim. (page 27)

Dickens’s Life

Charles John Huffam Dickens was born in 1812 on the south coast of England. He had one older sister, Fanny. After he was born, his parents had six more children. Charles’s father, John, had a terrible weakness, he liked to spend more than he earned and he wasn’t able to pay his debts. (page 1)

When Charles was twelve, he started work at a dirty, old factory. He had to walk more than five kilometres to reach the factory. Then he worked for ten and a half hours. (page 3)

Charles’s father was sent to Marshalsea Prison, a special prison for those who couldn’t pay their debts. Elizabeth, Charles’s mother, and the younger children lived there, but not Charles. (pages 3-4)

Charles married with Catherine (page 10) and they had ten children. (page 23)

Dickens’s fell in love with Ellen, she was a eighteen-year-old actress. Catherine discovered about Dickens’s feelings. Her discovery brought their marriage to an end. (page 42)
